Geneva, where the rivers meet
As the county seat of Geneva County, Geneva is also the largest city in the county with a population of 4,500. The population almost doubles during the work week as residents conduct business at the courthouse, shop and receive medical care.
The story of the two rivers that meet, the Pea River and the Choctawhatchee River, runs through the history of the town. Geneva began at the River Junction where the river meet.
From the beginning, the town has used the natural resources of the rivers to establish its economy throughout history. Today these waters are a source of recreation, but its early settlers prospered by using the rivers to trade goods by steamboat.
Geneva was founded around 1830 by Henry A. Younge who named the town after his wife Mary’s hometown of Geneva, N.Y. Early settlers used the river as a means of business and trade. The Choctawhatchee River flows into the Gulf of Mexico, which made Geneva a prime trading location. Privately owned steamboats hauled cotton, turpentine, lumber, agriculture commodities and other goods until the early 1900s.
Today, citizens can enjoy anything in Geneva without having to face the traffic and crime of larger towns. Many say it is the best of both worlds — convenience of the city and knowing your neighbors.
